Dimitrova-Todorova and L. Selimski.

The 8th Volume of the Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary has been published. The Dictionary is the only academic work that focuses on the etymology of Bulgarian words. The volume includes words beginning with letters т-, у- and ф-, and traditionally includes rich dialect lexis from the entire language territory. Much of the dialect words get an etymological explanation for the first time, while others have major updates and additions to existing etymologies. In this part of the Bulgarian vocabulary the two main layers of vocabulary in our language are revealed – Slavic and Balkan. Along with the inherited Slavonic vocabulary in the national language and the dialects, there are many borrowings from the neighbouring Balkan languages - Turkish, Greek and Romanian. Foreign language predominates in words with initial ф-, as this sound is not Slavic in origin. In the newly published volume you can learn more about the origin of words such as: тестè, тèфка, тетрàдка, теферùч, тигàн, тùкла, тùчам, тлакà, тлèя, товàр, тòпка, трòскот, труд, тържествò, уйдурдùсвам и уйдурмà, ухàжвам, файтòн, факèл, факùр, фидàнка, филùз, филùя, фльòнга, фукарà, etc.

Balgarski etimologichen rechnik [Bulgarian Etymological Dictionary].
